A Kid’s Guide to Installing *Newer Super Mario Bros Wii*
My 12 year old son just got himself set up with Newer Super Mario Bros Wii, basically without supervision. Since he ran into lots of snags, he wanted me to post this writeup of his on reddit for the benefit of other users. I hope someone finds it helpful.
A Guide to Installing Newer Super Mario Bros Wii
Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii is a fan made hack for the Wii game New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s a massive overhaul and it changes nearly everything adding 128 levels, a new power-up, new graphics, new soundtracks, and new bosses. This guide will show you how to install it.
(Disclaimer: Follow this guide at your own risk. It was created by my experience installing it and following these steps might result in ghastly things happening to any or all of the devices or people involved. Power outages at certain stages of the process may result in irreparable damage to your Wii.)
Requirements:
- A computer with internet access

- An SD/SDHC card with 4GB empty space with size above 2GB and not more than 32GB, formatted to FAT(the criteria are important, make sure you follow them closely)
- A Wii
- A New Super Mario Bros. Wii Disc
- A SD slot or connector for your computer
- Tolerance for high levels of frustration, agony, misery, and all attendant despairs and exhaustions.
1: Get the hack
First of all, you’ll need to get the hack itself. Visit newerteam.com and click on “Download Newer!”, then click on “Download Newer!”. It should start to download (may take a while).
2: Prepare the Wii + SD minutia
Ensure your Wii is connected to the internet. Then, go to options and make sure that your Wii is at version 4.3(note the letter after 4.3, it’s important). If it’s below 4.3, then update it to the latest version. Now go to “Internet” and then “Console Information”. Note your MAC address.
On the root of the SD card, remove or rename the “private” folder, if it exists.
Problems I had with step 2:
My Wii isn’t connecting!
I live in China and brought my Wii from the US. I needed to put in my China Wi-Fi network’s SSID (network name) to connect. That, however, is a more specific case (though it could be a problem elsewhere!). I suggest the troubleshooting guide on newerteam.com and support.nintendo.com.
My Wii won’t update!
Again, I live in China and am speaking in my case. I repeatedly got errors partway through downloading 4.3, but I tried several times and it worked on the 5th or 6th try.
3: Install The Homebrew Channel
Go to please.hackmii.com, then put in your Wii’s MAC address. Select the option at the top with the letter that is the same as the one on your Wii. Check the “Bundle the HackMii installer for me!” thingy and the “I’m not a robot” thingy. Click the “Cut the red wire” thing. A .zip file will download, save it. Unzip it. Copy and paste the CONTENTS of the LetterBomb folder (the one you just downloaded) onto the root of your SD card. You may delete the text files, they’re useless. Use the contents of the folder, not the folder itself, otherwise it will not work.
Then, properly eject your SD card and insert it into the SD slot in the Wii. The next step is to go to the Wii Message Board. Scroll back until you see the red letter with a bomb inside. If you are afraid of the scary bomb, don’t worry, it’s just a picture. Click on the letter. Scroll down and hit “confirm”. A page with a warning/disclaimer will show up. Wait a bit, and “Press 1 to continue” will show up. Then, needless to say, press 1. Then press A to continue. Then select to install the homebrew channel. When that finishes, select “exit”. There should be a new channel on your Wii called the Homebrew Channel.
Problems I had with step 3:
The scary red bomb letter won’t appear!
Make sure that you didn’t paste the folder, you pasted its contents and that your SD meets the criteria at the top.
It freezes when you click the letter.
Try repeating step 3, cutting the blue wire.
4: Riivolution
Download Riivolution at rvlution.net/riivolution.zip. Delete the files from LetterBomb on your SD and, optionally, put back your “private” folder, if it exists. On the SD, create an “apps” folder. Unzip the riivolution folder and put it in the apps folder. Make sure to use the folder itself, not just its contents. Now put the “newerSMBW” and “riivolution” folders from the Newer download onto the root of your SD. Put your New Super Mario Bros Wii disc in.

Put the SD in your Wii. Start the homebrew channel. Click on the riivolution thing. Make sure the option on the right is set to “Enabled”. Hit “Launch”.

Problems I had with step 4:
There’s no riivolution thingy in the homebrew channel!
